Opened the debate
I am grateful for the opportunity to hold the final Adjournment debate of 2025, addressing the Indices of Deprivation and its impact on Blackpool. The updated indices in October highlight that seven of the ten most deprived areas in England are located within Blackpool, with income deprivation deeply entrenched and affecting many local families. Employment deprivation is also pronounced due to a seasonal, insecure labour market. Education, health, employment, and housing all show significant challenges, impacting residents' quality of life and opportunities. The need for targeted investment and policy support is urgent.

Government Response
I appreciate the passionate and detailed speech by Chris Webb highlighting the challenges faced in Blackpool. The Indices of Deprivation, while a stark reminder of inequality, also serve as a tool to direct Government action effectively. We are committed to addressing these issues through targeted investment and policies tailored to specific needs. For instance, we have launched the Pride in Place scheme to improve public spaces and infrastructure in deprived areas. Additionally, we will work on scaling up successful local initiatives like Blackpool’s multi-agency youth antisocial behaviour working group. The Government is also exploring a more focused approach to coastal communities through potential departmental changes. We remain committed to improving health services, education outcomes, employment opportunities, and housing conditions in Blackpool. Grateful to Chris Webb for highlighting Blackpool's challenges. Acknowledges the high deprivation levels in coastal communities like Blackpool, which feature prominently in the new indices of multiple deprivation. The government redirects £2 billion funding to deprived areas, with an 11% increase in Blackpool's core spending power by 2028-29. Pride in Place programme will deliver up to £20 million over a decade to improve community infrastructure and cultural venues. Additional investment through the Pride in Place impact fund provides £1.5 million for Blackpool to support local economic activity. Government plans include building more social housing, tackling crime, supporting employment growth, and addressing health inequalities specific to coastal communities. The Coastal Navigators Network was launched by NHS to tackle acute health challenges. Open to further suggestions on how to support deprived areas like Blackpool.
