Firstly, Sarah Jones acknowledged the announcement of plans to close blast furnaces at Scunthorpe by British Steel. She expressed concern and commitment towards supporting affected workers with contingency plans activated to ensure support from DWP and DfE teams on the ground for as long as necessary. The Minister also confirmed £2.5 billion investment in steel sector, earmarking funding for British Steel beyond the deal with Tata Steel. A conditional financial offer was made designed to deliver sustainable future but awaits acceptance by the company. She reiterated the Government's commitment to work tirelessly to find a solution while maintaining support for primary steelmaking.
