Government Statement
Today I am updating the House on the disturbing developments unfolding in Iran. Since December 28, protests have escalated across the country following a currency devaluation, leading to brutal repression by authorities with reports suggesting thousands killed or arrested. The Iranian regime has imposed an internet and communication blackout since January 8, making it difficult to ascertain full details. We condemn the violence and demand respect for citizens' rights. The UK Prime Minister joined other European leaders in condemning these actions and the Foreign Secretary directly communicated our abhorrence to Iran's foreign minister. Further, the Middle East Minister has summoned the Iranian ambassador to underscore the gravity of this situation.
The regime’s conduct aligns with its past repression of protesters, support for terrorist groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis; interference in regional conflicts including Iraq and Syria; backing Russia against Ukraine; and state threats on UK soil. In response, the Government is taking action:
1) Ensuring domestic security through counter-terrorism measures.
2) Safeguarding British citizens in Iran, particularly Craig and Lindsay Foreman who face espionage charges.
3) Applying economic and diplomatic pressure, including re-imposing UN sanctions in October alongside France and Germany due to nuclear non-compliance. Since office, over 220 Iranian sanctions have been imposed. Further legislation will introduce comprehensive additional sanctions targeting finance, energy, transport, software sectors contributing to Iran's nuclear programme.
4) Rejecting regime propaganda that blames foreign influence for protests, emphasising the genuine grassroots nature of these movements drawing from all parts of society.

She confirmed raising the Foremans' case with Iran before Christmas and ongoing efforts with allies for further sanctions.
