Government Statement
This week, our nation comes together to give profound thanks to the men and women of our armed forces, their families and veterans—the heroes who give and sacrifice so much for their country at a time when the world is becoming increasingly dangerous, unpredictable and insecure. The statement highlights the contributions of UK armed forces in Ukraine, Singapore, NATO missions, UN peacekeeping efforts, and protecting the homeland. It also notes that 2024 marks the first national event since the inception of Armed Forces Day due to COVID restrictions. The Government restored the event this year with celebrations in Cleethorpes as part of a nationwide initiative involving over 180 events. The statement addresses the retention and recruitment crisis inherited from the previous government, emphasising efforts to improve the reserves and highlight opportunities for young people in defence-related careers.
