Government Statement

Government Statement
Today I am making a statement regarding the power outage at Heathrow airport caused by a substation fire on Friday, March 21st. Many homes, schools, and businesses were impacted due to loss of power, while thousands had their travel plans disrupted. The incident led to the closure of Heathrow until midnight that day after a large fire broke out at North Hyde substation. Despite efforts to redistribute power through other parts of the network, Heathrow concluded it required insufficient power for ongoing operations and closed temporarily. Power was restored domestically within hours but the airport took longer to resume full operations due to safety concerns. The incident resulted in over 1,300 flight cancellations and affected more than 200,000 passengers on Friday alone. The Government is closely monitoring airlines to ensure passenger rights are protected and restrictions were lifted on overnight flights to ease congestion. An independent National Energy System Operator investigation into the event has been commissioned by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero with initial findings expected within six weeks. Additionally, Ruth Kelly, a former Transport Secretary and Heathrow board member, was asked to review the airport's internal resilience.

Shadow Comment

Gareth Bacon
Shadow Comment
The shadow secretary acknowledges the disruption caused by the power outage at Heathrow and questions the reliance of the airport on a single substation, despite two additional substations available. He asks for assurances that the Secretary of State will remain engaged with Heathrow, airlines, and stakeholders to minimise impact on passengers and the economy. He seeks detailed information about energy resilience and critical infrastructure security in light of global threats like Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The shadow secretary questions whether current power supply structures are appropriate for such a large airport and asks what discussions have been had regarding securing energy supplies to major airports. He also inquires about timelines and public availability of findings from the Kelly review, urging steps to strengthen resilience against malicious actors.
